DeKalb County Jail Overview
DeKalb County Jail is operated by the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office as the county's adult pretrial detention center. The sheriff's materials say the jail houses adults over age 17 who are arrested by DeKalb County law-enforcement agencies, as well as adults arrested in DeKalb County by state or federal agencies. That makes the jail the local intake point for many arrests from county police, municipal departments, sheriff warrant activity, and outside agencies working in DeKalb County.
The jail is not a Georgia Department of Corrections prison. County jail records show a booking or custody episode, while sentenced state prisoners use the GDC offender query. A person may start in DeKalb County Jail after arrest, then later be released, transferred, sentenced to GDC, moved to federal custody, or held for another authority. Check the release fields before assuming a DeKalb jail search result means current custody.
The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office About page identifies the jail as Georgia's largest adult pretrial detention center. It gives the facility's public scale as 3,800 beds, an average daily population of about 2,200, and more than 40,000 detainees processed each year. Those are sheriff-published scale figures, not a live daily count.

DeKalb County Jail Inmate Lookup
The official lookup for this facility is the Tyler Jail Search. The broader Tyler public portal also hosts court and hearing searches, but county jail custody starts with the jail search application. Use it for current or recent DeKalb jailings, then open View Jailing for the strongest record detail.
- Open Tyler Jail Search and make sure the browser allows JavaScript and cookies.
- Enter at least three characters in the field labeled "Search for a jailing..." using the last name or fuller name.
- Use Date Booked for a recent arrest or Date Released when checking whether a past jail record is still active.
- Review the result card for name, SO number, booking number, facility/node, booking time, release time, arresting agency, and visible charges.
- Open View Jailing before using the record for bond, records, or family calls.
A DeKalb County Jail inmate record may include identity, booking date and time, release date and time, arresting agency, charge descriptions, bond/type fields, warrant data, disposition fields, and mugshot flags when available. The record is not a full Georgia criminal history. Filed charges, hearing dates, case status, and final outcomes are handled through court and prosecutor systems, not the jail roster.
Note: A released jailing can still appear in Tyler results, so read the release date and time before acting.
DeKalb County Jail Contact
Use the jail address for custody, bond, visitation, and inmate-service questions. The sheriff headquarters address is nearby but separate from jail operations. Specific phone lines matter because the sheriff publishes different numbers for general jail information, operations, command, family questions, bond, open records, and warrants.

DeKalb County Jail Visits
The sheriff's Inmate Visitation page says DeKalb County Jail visitation is handled through ViaPath / GTL VisitMe. All visitors must be on the inmate's approved visitation list. Remote visits cost $0.19 per minute, and inmates are allowed three remote 30-minute visits each week. Visits must be scheduled online at least 24 hours in advance. Telephone scheduling is not available.
| Schedule Item | DeKalb Jail Rule | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Daily morning window | 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. | Remote video |
| Daily evening window | 4:00 p.m. to 9:20 p.m. | Remote video |
| Weekly limit | Three 30-minute visits | Remote video |
| Scheduling lead time | At least 24 hours ahead | Online only |

Visits are recorded and electronically monitored except for attorney and clergy visits. The sheriff page also states that maximum security and mental health inmates cannot have visitors. If a visit cannot be scheduled, check approved-list status, inmate eligibility, the 24-hour lead time, and the ViaPath account before assuming the jail record is wrong.
DeKalb Jail Mail and Money
Mail rules changed in January 2026. The sheriff's ViaPath inmate mail notice says all personal mail is digital through tablets and routes through the Phoenix, Maryland mail address below. The older support page still contains postcard language, so the current ViaPath PDF should be checked before sending anything. Use the complete facility name, the inmate's full name, the inmate identifier, and the sender's full physical address.
| Service | Official Detail |
|---|---|
| Mail address | Dekalb County Jail, GA / Inmate Name, Inmate Identifier / P.O. Box 247 / Phoenix, MD 21131 |
| Phone calls | Housing-unit coinless phones; $0.10 per minute; legal services calls listed at no cost |
| Deposits | ViaPath, GettingOut, ConnectNetwork, lobby kiosks, and phone funding channels |
| Funding identifiers | Depositor needs inmate first and last name, inmate ID, and date of birth |
The sheriff's Inmate Support Services page describes accounts, phones, kiosks, medical care, meals, recreation, and commissary. ConnectNetwork handles AdvancePay and PIN Debit channels. GettingOut handles tablet and messaging accounts. Automated payment services may charge fees, so do not assume the account deposit itself is the only cost.
DeKalb County Jail Booking
Booking starts when a person is received into DeKalb County Jail and processed into the jail's custody system. Jail staff conduct intake, issue clothing, monitor counts, supervise meals, and manage services. The Tyler jail record is the public access point for the booking episode, but the record may lag or omit fields that are not public. Use the SO number and booking number when calling the jail, asking about bond, or filing a sheriff records request.
Bond is handled through the Bonding and Inmate Services page and the Bail Bonding Office at the jail. The sheriff lists cash bond, professional bonding company, and property bond. The bond office is open 7:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. daily, including weekends and holidays, and the official bond phone is 404-298-8195. A nonrefundable $20 fee applies to all bonds under sheriff instructions.
DeKalb Jail Records Fallbacks
If the Tyler search does not locate the person, try spelling variants, fewer name parts, and booking or release date filters. For a very recent arrest, call the jail information line or the inmate family hotline. For a copy of an arrest or booking record, use the sheriff open-records request form or the GovQA Open Records Center. A strong request includes full name, date of birth if known, SO number, booking number, arrest date range, and the exact records sought.
For state custody after a sentence or transfer, search the Georgia Department of Corrections offender query. For federal custody, use the BOP Inmate Locator. For immigration custody, use ICE ODLS. These systems do not replace the DeKalb County Jail roster. They cover different custody stages after the county jail record may no longer be current.
Note: Confirm custody, visit rules, and mail instructions with the jail before travel, deposits, or time-sensitive plans.
